When John Lithgow was a child, he was often babysat by Coretta Scott, who later married Dr. Martin Luther King. Born into a theatrical family, his mother was an actress and his father, a theatre director and producer who ran a Shakespearean theatre company. Lithgow graduated from Harvard University magna cum laude and won a Fulbright scholarship to study drama at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. He has appeared in scores of productions ranging from Winston Churchill in The Crown to the transexual in The World According to Garp, and from a scared witless airplane passenger in Twilight Zone: The Movie to a comic alien commander on 3rd Rock from the Sun. He is an accomplished guitarist as well as a registered pastor.
