Community Play Initiative

Home / Community Play Initiative

In 2021, Durango PlayFest began its Community Play Initiative to highlight the work of new and emerging playwrights in La Plata and surrounding counties. The selected individual will collaborate with a director to develop their work. Prior playwriting experience is not required. Local actors and crew will bring the play to life at a reading during the festival. We seek work with strong, relevant themes – whether comedy or drama – that address our humanity.

The play reading will take place during the 5th annual festival, June 28-July 2, 2023. For information, email durangoplayfest@gmail.com.

DETAILS:

• Submission deadline: December 1, 2022
• 60-90 pages long
• No more than four characters.
• Prefer that the individual live within daily driving distance to Durango to attend rehearsals during June. (We’ll accommodate work schedules of the playwright and actors as much as possible.)
• Email submissions (Word doc or PDF) to durangoplayfest@gmail.com.
• Subject line should read SUBMISSION: Title of the Play
• Please include your name and contact information on the first page. All pages should be numbered and feature the title of the play.

2021 PLAYWRIGHT – Lindsey Kirchoff

Golden Gate

Widowed at 58, Beth can’t take any more grief books or yoga classes. Her new plan? Jump off the Golden Gate Bridge. But before Beth can take the leap, she is rudely interrupted by Izzie, a rambunctious young backpacker, and Elle, a reluctantly single thirty-something professional. Rather than face the police, Beth agrees to spend the night with the world’s worst Good Samaritans.
